Twitter and Posterous « MattMaroon.com

So at the risk of sounding too much like a cheerleader, I’m going to call it right now. Posterous is a Twitter that doesn’t suck, and all the cool kids are going to end up there. I guess I’m not going too far out on a limb there given their traffic graph:

But I think they’re already a way better experience than Twitter, and they’re just getting started.

Thanks, Matt! We promise to fix those Outlook bugs for you :)

Agreed! At SXSW 09 I proclaimed, "Posterous will be the IT thing before the year is up!" No doubt in my mind.

Have you and @garrytan always considered yourselves competition for Twitter?

Twitter + Posterous are like PB&J -- you can have it on its own, but certainly better together too!

@alan we actually never though of ourselves as Twitter competitors and still don't. Twitter is great for 140 characters, and we're great for everything else.

Our goal is to integrate with them as much as possible, and there are so many possibilities here. We already do:

autopost to twitter for new posts
post to twitter on new comments
login to posterous to comment via twitter oauth
twitter api for posting via client apps

Basically, we want to spam your twitter stream as much as possible. We're just making Twitter more useful (and they make us more useful)

Twitter was great when everyone had Nokia 5190's. Now that smartphones are becoming more prevalent, there's just no longer the constraint of 140 characters. Plus, why would I waste an SMS (which costs me money) when I can email (which still costs me money but I don't notice it cuz it's unlimited data)?

BTW, I didn't really start using Twitter until Posterous came around. You could say you're like a gateway drug... ;-)

Agree with your analysis. Posterous is going to redefine the social web scene. Not just twitter. Everything.

@garrytan Yes. I initially joined posterous because it reinvented email. I'd already used services like twittermail for sending tweets (meaning my simple phone's battery wouldn't die every time I went online) but posterous, obviously, offers way more than that. So far, I think that the twitter experience is improved by using posterous and I'm only just beginning to explore it's possibilities. Although nervous about putting all my eggs in one basket, I can imagine that posterous will become to the social web what a service like google reader is to news/blog feeds etc (and no doubt a lot more). Just doing this; commenting on one site and simultaneously tweeting is extremely interesting. I'm not a techie of any kind but, for what it's worth, that's what I think :)

I feel posterous is great, even greater than twitter. But to be fair, twitter's success is partly because of its open API which enables third party services/applications to be built on top of twitter.
Posterous has an API but it is either incomplete or not published openly.

@Prateek what we have now is just the tip of the iceberg. Our API will eventually support full uploading of posts, importing, exporting, and more.

When I'm reading via google reader, some sites don't allow you to tweet from the bottom of the article in the feed. With posterous, I can blog the article and send it to twitter at the same time simply by sending an e-mail. Posterous is an excellent product that I will continue to promote.

Bingo !

We have no doubts abt that. We are with you.

Yes Sachin, I am quite sure that a more feature rich and complete API will be available soon. And perhaps I will be one of the first to incorporate it in our app. All the best to Posterous.

I have absolutely no influence over ANYONE, so I don't know if my vote counts, but.. I AGREE!! I think Twitter sucks. And I love posterous. I don't use it a whole lot but only because I already have a blog that's been going for almost 3 years now. But I know so many people who sorta WANT to blog but haven't a clue about HOW to... perfect potential posterous users... if I could just convince them to give it a go. I'll keep trying.

Posterous fits very well with Twitter -- an extension that filters out some of the twitter noise. Great post
