Hot Glass, Cold Beer is a really great event put on by Public Glass in San Francisco. For just $25, you get unlimited food, beer, live music, and get to watch skilled craftsmen work with glass. While we were there, they constructed most of a man, including feet (shoes), legs, and attached a torso.

You can see more photos and some video here.

I don't think I could live any closer to the epicenter of Web 2.0

Friday was the office warming party for Scribd. They just moved to awesome new offices in SOMA. Congrats on the growth guys!

When I looked up their address on Google Maps, I was surprised to find them literally about 50 feet from my apartment. I knew I was close to the Twitter building (Scribd is in the same space), but I didn't realize it was *right there*. They couldn't be an closer.

We got offices in North Beach. I guess we're not cool enough to be in SOMA. I sound like one of the new Microsoft ads

We've looked at a lot of office space in the past few weeks. Locations fell into 3 buckets:

1. SOMA. SOMA (south of market) is where all the cool, new web 2.0 companies are based. Twitter is there, and a whole slew of Y Combinator startups. Places we saw were generally awkward or expensive. People are sharing space with lots of companies, many guys all piled into small rooms.

But I don't get the appeal. There's nothing around there. The food SUCKS. It's like, the place to be because it's "cool" but really, there are better places. Everyone is quoting "$1 per square foot!" but when you actually find space, it's a lot more expensive than that.

Believe me, i'm not going to overpay just so I can be a little closer to Twitter HQ.

2. Financial District. We saw some REALLY sweet spaces around Union Square. Places have been empty for a while and people are willing to negotiate on rent pretty liberally. Unfortunately places were just a little too large and too expensive for what we need. But in a year, I can totally see us growing into an office there. And there's good food to eat!

3. North Beach. It's a little more out of the way from transportation like Bart. But it's a beautiful neighborhood with LOTS of great food. And since we have a connection with a building owner there (my girlfriend, Kate, works in a building with openings), we got a sweet deal on a space that's the perfect size for us.

So we'll be in North Beach starting August 1st. I'm really looking forward to setting up the office, in particular building a kegerator. I've wanted my own kegerator ever since I started drinking (good) beer. When I learned Brett shares the same love, we decided this is a must for Posterous HQ. Not that North Beach is lacking in great bars...

HD video: San Francisco Cable Car ride from Powell St to Fisherman's Wharf, in 2 minutes

On Saturday we took the San Francisco cable car from the Powell St stop, where it turns around, all the way to Fisherman's Wharf. I shot the entire ride in 1080p with my Canon 5D. I'd never done the cable car ride before but now I highly recommend it. Make sure you are sitting in the front, or hanging off the side. It's a great way to see a lot of the city.

Check out the rolling fog over Alcatraz towards the end of the video. Very cool. Make sure you click to full screen the video, HD is on.

The Powell St station is also where the cable car turns around.

Details on the video: Canon 5D Mark II 1080p H.264. Edited on Final Cut Pro with ProRes 422. 1000% speed across the board. Exported to H.264 and then uploaded to Vimeo. The exported H.264 video still looks flawless on my machine, but Vimeo definitely added a lot of encoding artifacts. Boooo. You can click to download the quicktime video on the Vimeo page.

No, I'm not going to stop complaining about flash video. Get over it.

Some more amazing views. Such a perfect day, sunny, but with just enough fog for some cool dramatic photos.

Then we took one of the ghetto boat rides that went around Alcatraz and under the Golden Gate Bridge. BYOB. GTOB.

The boat ride was too rough and too wet to get any good shots. Here are a couple iPhone pics though:

Super cool place. Huge beer selection, lots of meat, and it's cheap.
