Buy used books and CDs on Amazon for a penny
It's no secret that I love Amazon.com. I was having a great discussion with my dad about the financial collapse. We went from banks to mortgages to consumers to retail to Amazon.com, one of the few companies doing well (better than most) in these though times.
Amazon.com is the place to buy almost all goods. You can read reviews, and pretty much know you are paying the lowest price. There's usually no tax and free shipping. It blows me away that some old school brick and mortar stores still exist. For example, when my mom was shopping for an TV, we picked a model on Amazon that cost $1700 shipped. We went to Best Buy to see it in person, $2k plus tax and delivery. Then at Sears, $2300 plus tax and delivery!!
Who buys stuff at Sears anymore! It's unbelievable. You pay more, and probably get worse service and a worse guarantee. Even if you don't have time to comparison shop, just do ONE THING. Check the reviews and price at Amazon.com, then do as you wish. It's not that hard!
And now for a little secret:
If you are looking to purchase any media that is not a new release, buy it used. The average cost of a popular used item? $0.01 plus shipping. A penny. There is such a high stock of popular items that places are willing to sell them for next to nothing. Shipping is $3-4 so they just make a bit off that. Some examples:
Green Day - Dookie. $10.99 brand new. $0.01 plus $2.98 shipping used
Kite Runner. $10.20 brand new. $0.01 plus $3.98 shipping used
I basically buy all my books and DVDs like this. Old editions of programming books and travel guides are also a penny. And sometimes when I want to buy music from Amazon or iTunes, I'll get the used CD for even less! As long as it's not new or rare, you can get it super cheap. It's definitely at least worth searching for. Enjoy!
