At your next party, use iTunes DJ to let *your guests* pick what music is played and vote on the next song

My friend, Al, is responsible for the Remote app [iTunes link] on the iPhone. It's a great tool that allows you to control the music on your Mac or Apple TV using your iPhone.

The latest version added some really great features that aren't advertised very well. First of all, you can control your Apple TV using your iPhone using swipes and gestures. It's pretty neat, but the Apple TV hasn't gained enough traction for this feature to get noticed.

But one feature that deserves a lot of attention is iTunes DJ.

  • Lets say you are having a party. Just select a song in iTunes and choose "iTunes DJ". This will create a new playlist around that song automatically
  • Anyone at your party with an iPhone can launch Remote, connect to your iTunes, and see what's being played
  • Your friends can click "Request song" to browse *your* music selection and add songs to the playlist
  • They can also vote on songs in the list. The song with the most vote gets played next

Al is a DJ on the side and has always been interested in bringing a better DJ experience to bars and clubs.

This is the future of the juke box. The democratization of music wherever you are.

Love Remote.app but hadn't used the dj function on it. Would be great at a lounge or bar, no?

Absolutely. Once this app catches on, i can really see real bars and lounges using it to drive their music

Love the remote app on the iphone, but is impossible to get it to work with firefly (an open source alternative to itunes server). If only...

Yep, this is incredibly cool. If I owned a bar/club I'd be wanting to implement this ASAP. I'm still a fan of the pay-to-download jukeboxes... with this you're limited to what's available on the playlist. If the host doesn't have an impressive/diverse playlist, it might not work out as cool as you think. But this is coming from a person who likes to disturb with aggressive metal or repetitive electronic whenever possible sooo....

@Stephen yes you are limited to what the host has on their list, but with a traditional juke box, you're limited to the physical music on the machine.

But imagine if in the future, you could use Remote and play the music on your device, but played through the hosts speakers.

Or take that a step further, and imagine if in Remote, you could choose *any* song in the iTunes store... Apple could charge your iTunes account 99 cents, and the bar owner could get a cut. Now that would be awesome.

@Sachin Ah, being able to play from your own device would be the dream scenario. And being able to download any song and have it play for 99 cents... I would be perfectly willing to pay for that kind of convenience.

Really cool idea. Some people frequent certain bars for the content of their jukebox. Allowing the clientele to shape the content of the jukebox by adding the type of music they like to the playlist would be pretty damn cool.

This can be done now. You'll need a jailbroken iPhone with firefly installed on it. Once that is done you'll be able to select any song on your iPhone and stream it to an available iTunes server or AirTunes device

Great post Sachin. A couple of guys held a party this past weekend in Cape Town, South Africa at a club, where everyone had to bring an iPhone/iPod touch, and they could be the DJ. Apparently it was a huge success :) Check out the link below for a write up on the story ;)

Super cool technology. But the problem with democratization of music is that many people like music that sucks.

Sachin, I had a party a few months ago and told friends ahead of time of my planned dj crowdsourcing using this method. This aspect of the party was a huge success because of this and it was funny to watch party goers lobbying to have others vote on their songs so they could move up the queue and play sooner. I highly recommend people try this. I found this story about it prior to the party that provided info on setting it up http://www.maclife.com/article/howtos/howto_setup_itunes_dj_your_mac_and_iphone

Mark, that's a really good point about people lobbying for their music. At a large party where people don't know each other, it's a good ice breaker, and good reason for people to walk up to and talk to people they don't already know.

love the idea of friends selecting their music on a party. But I got no ipod or iphone. Does it work without it? Just using iTunes?
