Great new tequila bar less than a block from my old apartment in New York

I miss New York so much. I wonder why we don't get cool places like this in SF.

Monika sent me a link to this new tequila bar in the east village. Created by the same people as Death & Co, one of my other favs.

slide up to the bar and order one of master mixologist Phil Ward's new creations (like the Loop Tonic—blanco tequila, green chartreuse, vermouth and celery bitters) before finding your way upstairs. There, under a stained-glass chandelier meant to evoke a tarantula, you can settle with your favorite señorita, a few small bites and get to know tequila again for the first time.

Coco500 in soma

Really great dinner. Duck liver terrine was amazing. Good cocktails. My lamb was tough, but they didn't charge me for it so that was nice. Afterwards I got the chance to drive my Miata for the first time in months. Spun that car around SOMA like you wouldn't believe. That car is sick. I miss it so much. You can slide it around any roads anywhere, so amazing.

Valentine's Day dinner

Kate and I had a delicious Valentine's Day dinner at Oola right around the corner from us here in SOMA. We got the private, curtained off table upstairs and had an amazing feast. I highly recommend this restaurant.

It was a pretty busy week of eating out. We also went to:

Just For You - Amazing brunch
Fringale - Great french food
Andalu - Creative tapas. Similar to The Stanton Social in New York. Love this place.

Dinner at Gary Danko

Last Friday Kate, Sean and I went to Bourbon and Branch (well, The Library) for the birthday party of a friend of a friend of a... well, someone we don't know. We had some delicious cocktails, and didn't even find the friend who was my connection. We were getting hungry so Sean had the brilliant idea to try to eat at Gary Danko. On a Friday night with no reservation? No way. He called, we got a spot, and within 2 minutes we were in a cab heading up to Fisherman's Wharf.

We had an incredible 2 hour+ four course meal with wine, cheese, and port. This was my second time at Gary Danko and I'll say that it is *by far* the best restaurant i've been to in San Francisco. Not only is the food incredible, it has the best service. They are the nicest, *least snobby* staff you will ever find. The sommelier had no problem serving us the cheapest wine on the menu. Our main server, who I think was the manager, really took care of us. He chatted us up the whole night, cracking jokes, and really made the night a ton of fun.

Sorry for the bad pictures...I didn't have my big camera with me.

Look at the size of that cheese plate! It was for ONE PERSON. He hooked Kate up with a bunch of cheese because he knew Sean and I were going to steal some from her :). We were also given mini pumpkin cake cheesecakes to take home with us. Yum,

A great dinner at Bacar in SOMA

Bacar is a great restaurant just a block from where we live. We had a great dinner. See my review here.

The coolest part was watching the bartender make my Blue Blazer. I had never heard of this before but it's actually becoming more common. Bourbon lit on fire and mixed with water between two silver mugs.

Cocktails at The View

Cocktail bar at the top of the marriot hotel. We walked in and got an amazing table right at the floor to ceiling windows. Views of downtown sf and the bay bridge. Beautiful

My last fancy dinner in New York City

Gary (Liu) took me and Joe out for dinner tonight since Joe and I are both heading back to the west coast. Gary was my freshman year roommate and even after we left college, he remained one of my closest friends. Four years ago we travelled to Brazil together. And three years ago I joined him in New York.

We had a grand New York feast at Nougatine, the casual dining room of the Michelin 3 star restaurant Jean Georges (they share one kitchen). What an incredible meal. We shared all the food:

Drinks
Passion: Bourbon and passion juice. Amazing
Pinot Noir wine

Appetizers
Tuna Tartare
Beet Salad
Peekyote Crab Cake
Fois Gras Brulee

Entrees
Snapper
Pork Chop
Short Ribs

Dessert
Jean Georges Chocolate Cake

A really amazing meal. We all loved it. After three years of New York dining, we have all become very critical of these types of restaurants. It takes a lot to make us happy, and Nougatine does it well (and at less than half the price of the formal dining room next door).

On the way home I got off at Union Square and walked about a mile home. I passed by so many bars and restaurants I have been to in the past three years, so many memories. I am going to miss this city.

I am also going to miss Gary and Joe, of course. Joe will be in California for a few months coming up, so I'll see him again soon. But then he's going to Korea and then Hong Kong for a while (maybe three years). And Gary is staying in New York.

After college Gary and I found ourselves together in New York. After high school, Joe and I lost touch, then found each other in San Francisco, then moved to New York within weeks of each other and are now moving out of New York within weeks of each other.

Thanks for dinner Gary. I will miss you.

SF food and fun, May 2008

Now that Posterous has an AWESOME facebook app, i'm going back and posting some photos I didn't get around to posting before.

These are photos taken from my last trip to SF as an Apple employee. Me and the Apple crew at Spruce (3 stars), Nils as seen through a Manhattan (5 stars), Foreign Cinema (2.5 stars), and awesome sandwiches at Los Gatos Meats (4.5 stars).
